  • 5 Tips for a Stress Free Holiday Season

Posted on November 24, 2015 by Core Products

It’s November and that means only a few weeks until the kick-off of the holiday season. Keeping your stress level low through what can be the busiest time of the year is essential to your overall well-being. Here at Core Products we want to offer 5 tips for a stress free holiday season.

    1. Be prepared. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy that Thanksgiving turkey, or to find that perfect gift. Start preparing now so you’ll have less stress later.
    2. Don’t take on too much. Many of us have such busy schedules that we take on too much during the holidays. If it’s going to stress you out to have family over to your house, don’t do it. There are many nice restaurants for holiday meals- and the best part is, you don’t have to clean up the mess.
    3. Save a day off for when the holidays are over. Many of us use our vacation days during the prime holiday season to spend time with family and enjoy the company. But one of the best things you can do is save one day off for when everything is over. Once the kids are back in school and the family has left, take a day to de-holiday your house, get that exercise you’ve been avoiding and set yourself up mentally for the new year ahead.
    4. Don’t worry about a clean house, instead focus on family. Many adults spend so much time cooking and cleaning that they don’t even have time to catch up with loved ones. It’s not necessary to do the dishes immediately following a meal. Instead stay at the dinner table and enjoy some relaxing communication. Remember, when the holidays are over there will be plenty of time to tidy up but you may miss out on family memories if you concentrate on cleaning instead of conversation.
    5. Prepare yourself mentally for the unexpected. As with life, many things come up unexpectedly at the last minute. Realize that these things happen and it always seems to work out. Don’t let unexpected events ruin your holiday cheer. If your flight is delayed or you are stuck in a traffic jam, take the time to catch up with your family- the real meaning of the holidays. Think of unexpected events as adventures.

Following these simple guidelines will get you the worst of your aunts fruit cake!

How to Avoid the Pain Pill Epidemic

Over the past few years prescription drugs have become the drug of choice for many addicts. Some may be prescribed the drug after an injury or surgery or some simply may be looking for a good high. What has become overwhelmingly transparent is the addictive nature of these drugs. Here at Core Products we offer several solutions to pain so that you can be comfortable without relying on risky pain pills that may leave you with a worse problem than you had to start.

The number of people, especially older, who are experiencing some type of pain is overwhelming. It’s no wonder they are looking for a quick fix, sometimes to simply make it through the day. But be warned- using prescription drugs like Oxycodone may take away the pain temporarily but may leave you with a lifetime of pain ahead of you- addiction.

To avoid resorting to pain pills for comfort we have several products that can not only help prevent pain but can give you the comfort you need to function day to day.

  • November is National Sleep Comfort Month

Posted on November 13, 2015 by Core Products

November is National Sleep Comfort Month and here at Core Products we are all about getting a good night’s sleep. To honor this holiday we have come up with the best products to give you that added comfort during the night.

Neck Rolls are a great replacement for pillows if you suffer from neck pain. A neck roll like the Positioning Bolster Dutchman Roll softly cushion the back of your neck reshaping the top portion of your spine back into its natural position.

Sleep position is another factor that contributes to comfortable sleep. Sleeping flat on your back is the most recommended position for sleeping; however many of us find ourselves moving around in the night and ending up on our sides or stomachs. These positions may alter the natural shape of your neck and spine and cause added discomfort. Remember- back is best. Therapeutica ergonomic pillows are perfect for back sleeping!

Find the right mattress. With a variety of mattress choices available, make sure your mattress is up to par or get a new one. Mattresses can be the leaders in causing sleep discomfort. It may be worth the extra money to invest in a good night’s sleep by choosing the right mattress.

Remember, a better night’s sleep will make you happier, healthier and more prepared to face the everyday stressors of life.

  • How to Survive Holiday Weight Gain

Posted on October 31, 2015 by Core Products

Halloween candy, Thanksgiving dinner, holiday cookies and treats- it seems almost impossible to avoid weight gain during the holidays. Going into the holiday season, here at Core Products your health is our concern. Obesity is a major epidemic in the U.S. and most are finding it difficult to maintain an ideal weight. The temptations during the holidays only contribute to this problem, so it’s best to get a plan in action now to avoid those excess calories. Being overweight causes many health problems and is a major contributor to back pain which plagues many.

Here are some steps to take now to avoid having to work off those extra lbs later.

    -Set Goals

Set a plan now for how you will limit excess calories. Perhaps increase your workout routine to account for the extra temptations, or vow to give up one of your favorite indulgences for the season.

    -Eat Before a Party

If you are going to be attending a holiday party, it’s best to eat protein before you leave the house. Have a handful of almonds, this will tide you over and may even give you the power to resist the bread basket.

    -Trade Water for Alcohol

Holiday parties are notorious for “drinking holiday cheer.” Alcoholic beverages are full of empty calories. Staying hydrated with lots of water will not only keep you away from the cocktails but it may also make you less inclined to indulge at dinner.

Holiday weight gain is definitely a concern for many- but having fun should also be a priority. Enjoying time with family and friends is priceless, but you can have just as good of a time without sampling everything on the dessert tray! Core Products wishes everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!

  • How to FINALLY Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Posted on October 16, 2015 by Core Products

You’ve tried all the tricks you’ve read about. You cut back on caffeine late in the day, you avoid TV right before bed and you’ve spent hundreds of dollars on mattresses, pillows and gadgets- and may have even resorted to a sleep medication. Before you spend another sleepless night, here at Core Products we have provided some simple tips to help you get your zzzzz’s.

In today’s busy world, insomnia is all too common. We all know the recommended hours to sleep at night are 7-8, but whether you have too much to do or can’t turn off your mind, many don’t come close to this guideline. Lack of shut-eye not only leaves you sleepy the next day, but chronic, long-term insufficient sleep increases odds of diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, even weight gain.

Here at Core Products we realize the importance of a good night’s sleep. Here are some recommendations to get you back in bed!

    -  Don’t drink alcohol late at night

While drinking alcohol may relax you, it interferes with getting into a deep sleep. If you are going to have a drink, have it well before bedtime.

    -  Write down your thoughts- get your thoughts in check

With the busy lives we lead, we often have trouble turning off our brain at night. Keeping a   journal and writing down your concerns or anxieties can help you eliminate those thoughts and turn off your mind.

    -  Take a bath

A relaxing, warm bath at night helps to calm the body and mind and makes you sleepy.

    -  Set the mood

Make sure your bedroom is a calm environment. Avoid bright lights and bright colors and keep your bedroom lights dimmed or use lamps.

    -  No electronics

Keeping a television in your room not only will likely keep you up later than you should be, but the lights and distraction can interrupt the sleep cycle. Tablets and phones should also be put away somewhere outside the bedroom to avoid unnecessary distractions.

    -  Make your goal relaxation, not sleep

If you use these tips and still can’t seem to get the sleep you need, instead of watching the clock tick by, just tell yourself your goal is to simply relax not sleep. This may trick your brain into releasing the pressure of how many hours of sleep you get, and if nothing else, relaxing is a good way for the body to rejuvenate.

    -  Choose the right pillow

Core Products offers cervical pillows and specialty pillows that can help alleviate pain and add comfort, leading to a better night’s sleep.

Following these simple tips will help get you the right amount of sleep so you can face the day relaxed and rested!

  • Hot Verses Cold Therapy- When to Use What

Posted on October 5, 2015 by Core Products

We’ve all heard someone say, “Put ice on it!” or “Use a hot water bottle for back pain!” But how do you determine when it’s appropriate to use heat therapy verses cold therapy? Here at Core Products, we’ve broken down the facts on when to use heat therapy and when to use cold therapy so you can stop playing the guessing game.

We’ve eliminated the guessing with these specific tips for opting for heat verses cold therapy for injuries and pain.

    When to use cold:

Cold therapy should be used mainly only to treat acute or new injuries, this includes traumatic incidents like falling or twisting a muscle, which are immediately painful. Cold therapy, such as our Vinyl Cold Pack Wipes, produce vasoconstriction- slowing circulation and reducing muscle pain. Injuries that include bleeding, inflammation, swelling and pain that needs to be controlled immediately, will experience relief with cold therapy. Cold therapy can be used to help relieve strains, sprains, headaches and other soft tissue injuries. Cold packs should be used for approximately 20 minutes at a time and reapplied every 1-3 hours. Following the first few days of cold therapy, you can begin to alternate between cold and heat to help increase blood flow to the affected area.

    When to use heat:

Applying heat to pain or an injury helps to relax muscles by drawing blood to the targeted tissues. Heat therapy should be used for chronic injuries- those that are not suddenly onset. Warmth decreases muscle spasms, relaxes tense muscles, relieves pain and can increase range of motion. Warmth can provide relief for chronic pain including arthritis. Heat should be applied for about 15-20 minutes to increase blood flow and can also be used prior to exercise to increase flexibility.

The basic rules of thumb to remember are to use cold therapy for new injuries and heat therapy for chronic injuries and pain. Core Products offers a variety of options for both heat and cold therapy. We also offer moist heat therapy products- which many believe is more effective at warming tissues than dry heat.

  • Working Parents Day

Posted on September 14, 2015 by Core Products

The days of a single income household are becoming more and more rare with most households having both parents carrying jobs outside the home. September 16th is Working Parents Day and we’d like to celebrate these parents with tips to keep you healthy and rested so you can enjoy every moment with their families at the end of the day.

Stress is a common factor among working parents in the U.S. There is pressure put on both moms and dads to not only contribute to the household income by carrying full-time jobs but also maintain all of the other household and parenting responsibilities. For many, there is simply not enough time in the day and sleep often suffers. Whether you have too much to do to get a good nights’ sleep or you have insomnia while lying in bed thinking of all the responsibly looming over you, sleep is usually the first sacrifice. Many studies have stressed the importance of 7-8 hours of sleep per night for optimal health. Even though it may not seem that is possible- make every effort to get your rest. Being well-rested will reduce stress and also give you the energy you need to face the duties ahead.

It’s also important to establish a set of priorities. Don’t sacrifice your family time by staying at work those extra hours. Leave the office on time and try to clear your mind of workplace stress before going home to your family. Your children can sense when you are stressed and it will likely leave them feeling stressed as well. Take time on the drive home to decompress- take some deep breaths and let the work day go so you can focus on family.

Childcare is one of the most important factors in determining who will care for your child when you return to work. It’s stressful for parents to leave their child in the care of another. Before you commit do your research. Take tours of facilities you are considering and ask other families what their experiences have been. If you are taking your child to an in-home child care setting make sure you ask for references and call! Get to know those caring for your children and make sure they have adequate information about any health or allergy concerns.

Keep these tips in mind from Core Products for success at work and at home!

  • September is Baby Safety Month

Posted on September 10, 2015 by Core Products

There aren’t many things as precious as newborn babies and their safety is surely a top priority for parents. Despite their cuteness, babies can cause stress especially for new parents. There are so many things to remember with babies like baby gates and baby proofing, but making sure babies are healthy and safe should be on top of the list. We’ve compiled some tips to help keep babies safe during Baby Safety Month.

Sleeping. There are a ton of products on the market today that promise to help your baby sleep at night. BE CAREFUL- many of these products have been recalled or have proven not only to not help sleep but can also harm babies. To prevent injuries or something as serious as SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) always read the latest information about any products you are considering and make sure they aren’t recalled. It may be best to forgo any of the misleading products and keep your baby safe in the crib without the gimmicks.

Car Safety. From the time you leave the hospital with your newborn you realize how precious that cargo is! Having a federally approved car seat is essential and so is installing it correctly. Always read the safety instructions for your car seat and if you are concerned about installation, there are often programs through a local organization or police department that can assist with correct installation. Remember the back seat is the safest place for all children.

Choking. The scariest times in parents’ lives may be when they suspect their child is choking. Choking is a real danger especially since young children like to put everything in their mouths. Make sure your child is playing with toys that are age-appropriate with no small pieces that can cause choking. Also, keep any chords or strings out of reach of your child to reduce the possibility of strangulation.

Bathing Safety. Bathing a child can be a joyous and bonding time for both parents and baby- but there are several precautions that need to be taken to ensure a safe bath time. Always check that the temperature of the water is OK before submersing your child. It’s best if you can turn down your water heater so there is not a chance that an older child could turn on the hot water and get burned. Never leave your child unattended. Numerous trips are taken to the emergency room every year due to bathing-related injuries. Let the phone ring or don’t answer the door if it means leaving your baby unattended in the bath.

Keeping babies safe can be overwhelming for even the most experienced parents. Keep these tips in mind and if you have any questions or concerns of what is appropriate for your child’s age turn to a trusted resource to help get your questions answered.

  • 4 Body Pains You Shouldn’t Ignore

Posted on September 6, 2015 by Core Products

Aches and pains are sometimes a natural part of the aging process- but what pains should not be ignored? Many Americans avoid seeking medical attention until ailments have become severe and advanced. Here at Core Products we have come up with 4 ailments that should NOT be ignored.

1.) Severe headache. If you are experiencing a headache that is uncommon for you or extremely painful seek medical attention immediately. Like with all of these ailments, there could be a simple cause but taking your chances by not seeking treatment can be life threatening. While a severe headache could be caused by something simple like a sinus headache it could also indicate a brain hemorrhage or brain tumor. If you are experiencing the worst headache of your life- go the ER immediately.

2.) Pain in the chest, shoulder or arm. Chest pain can indicate many things but most importantly it could be a sign of a heart attack. Most people believe they will feel extreme pain when experiencing a heart attack- but it’s often just discomfort or heaviness in the chest. Don’t wait for the pain to get worse- seek medical attention right away. The sooner you get medical health the better chances you have of surviving even a severe heart attack.

3.) Severe Abdominal Pain. Many serious medical ailments can be the cause of severe abdominal pain. Most likely severe abdominal pain can be attributed to a ruptured appendix or Gallbladder or pancreas problems. Don’t take the chance of your appendix rupturing- seek help right away.

4.) Calf pain can often be linked to a muscle injury or a result of strenuous exercise, but when the pain cannot be linked to an injury calf pain should not be ignored. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is very serious and occurs when the veins in your legs prevent blood from flowing and clots form. When a clot breaks loose it could lead to an even called an embolism. Embolisms can travel through the body and block arteries in your brain or lungs.

Listen to your body! If you are experiencing severe pain or any pain that is unusual enough to cause you concern, you should seek medical attention right away. You’ll save time and money (and maybe even your life!) if you address these concerns right away.
