The common injury is dubbed “tennis elbow,” but what a misnomer. As many sufferers know, you don’t have to pick up a racquet to feel pain shooting down the forearm when lifting or grasping objects.
The R.I.C.E. treatment – rest, ice, compression and elevation – may relieve some pain and inflammation of the elbow.
Beyond that, elbow bands offer comfort and support, giving temporary relief of inflammation. The NelMed Elbow Support features a metal bar to apply gentle pressure to the affected spot. Tennis elbow results from overuse of forearm muscles used in playing tennis, certainly, but also in painting, raking or other activities, especially if they have not been done for awhile. The repeated motions can create small tears in the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the outside bony area of the elbow.
Elbow tendonitis, a related ailment, is the inflammation and painful swelling of elbow tendons caused by racquet sports as well as other repetitive activity. Rheumatoid arthritis is another source of elbow pain.
