Banishing back pain with back supports

Use back supports at the office

We spend most of our day sitting. We sit in the office, dealing with projects and deadlines. Intent on meeting our goals, we sit improperly, with back bent over and shoulders stooped. Reports have shown that about 70 percent of people in the United States suffer from some form of pain because of sitting improperly. Often, we do it without realizing it. Because many don’t have the luxury of owning an expensive ergonomic office chair, we rely on back supports for our office chair to set us straight, figuratively and literally. Back supports are the perfect solutions for our aches and pains. Back supports ensure that the chair is properly cushioned for correct ergonomic seating while alleviating pressure on the lower back. Back supports allow you to relax your back while ensuring proper blood circulation through the entire body, specifically the legs.

Sitting correctly with adequate back supports will promote correct posture and prevent muscle fatigue. Proper posture prevents unnecessary back and neck pain. Proper posture also helps to relax spinal muscles and keeps the spine in a neutral position. There are many different types of back supports for chairs. They include lumbar cushions, back rests and cradles. The most popular type is lumbar cushions (lower back support pillows). They help provide support for the inward curve in the lumbar area of the spine. Sitting for extended periods of time without any lower back support can create muscle tension and sciatica. When used in a seated position, a lumbar support pillow fills the natural gap that is created between the lower spine and the chair. Lumbar back support is also helpful when sitting in a car for long-distance trips or while stuck in traffic on a daily basis. When the lumbar curve is supported, the downward forces of gravity and driving are absorbed much like a coiled spring, as opposed to a non-supported straight or slouched lower back.

Regardless of type, most back supports are made of memory foam, which molds to the natural contours of your back. Most importantly, back supports should fit into the natural curve of your lower back, filling in the space between your back and the back of your seat. These back supports can be used in conjunction with most types of chairs to best fit the individual's needs. Some products may be inflatable to increase or decrease the amount of support.
