Sprains & Strains

Sprains and strains to the neck muscles are often caused by sudden or abrupt movements, while playing sports, or otherwise; from repetitive stress, heavy, ill-fitting backpack or shoulder bags, improper lifting at the gym, at home or work. Be sure to determine what caused the sprain/strain and discontinue that activity - and be seen by a Health Care Professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Rest, chiropractic or massage therapy, the prescription of a proper orthopedic pillow to support the neck properly, and hot and cold treatment are often recommended to both alleviate pain and assist in eliminating the underlying condition.

Protective measures include sleeping on the right pillow, and using a shoulder bag or back pack which is engineered to alleviate unnecessary strain to the neck, using a lumbar support for proper positioning while driving or working at a desk.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches - also known as chronic daily headaches - usually affect both sides of the head, often involving the base of the skull and the back of the neck, and also front of the head. The associated pain with tension headaches tends to be mild to moderate, but persist over long periods of time. Often there is pressure and discomfort over the whole head, which can feel "tight," as if there is a band around it or as if it is "squeezed by a vice," Sometimes triggered by stress, the cause of tension headaches can be difficult to pinpoint. If this kind of pain persists, you should see your health professional.

Non-drug treatments, including the application of hot and cold, as well as massage, are often recommended. Fostering habits that support overall good health, such as exercise, a regular eating and sleeping schedule, proper posture may also contribute to reducing the number and severity of tension headaches.
