Where a bone in the knee has come out of place

Group most commonly affected

  • Common in young athletes

Other Information

  • Kneecap slides in a groove in the knee
  • Dislocation results when kneecap is out of the groove
  • Usually dislocates laterally

Causes

  • Direct trauma to kneecap
  • Pre-existing ligamentous laxity
  • Having the foot planted and trying to change direction (Closed Chain)

Symptoms

  • Extreme pain
  • Swelling
  • Sense of instability
  • Stretched ligaments (usually medially)
