Arthritis of the Neck
Arthritis of the neck is caused by the, mostly age-related, degeneration of the uppermost part of the spine. It most commonly affects the discs of the second and third cervical vertebrae, and occurs - but is not limited to - people over 50. It can also result from overuse, such as carrying heavy loads or taking strain on the neck over a long period of time, or from a sudden jolting or twisting movement. As the discs wear away and the bones come closer together they can put pressure on the nerve roots or chord.
If you are experiencing neck pain or numbness, you should see your Health Care Professional for diagnosis and treatment recommendations. If the condition is acute, this may include wearing a soft collar during the day and at night. The use of a properly prescribed pillow may contribute to greater comfort by providing needed support to this delicate area of the body.
