How to Get Constant Back Support with Lumbar Support Pillows

Brian Acton

Sitting for too long at the office, at home, or while traveling can be bad for your spinal health and cause serious back pain. Lumbar support pillows are easy-to-use products that can help by supporting your back, promoting good posture, and alleviating pain. You simply put them behind your back on your chair to maintain proper spinal positioning.

But to ensure you’re getting lumbar support all the time, you need to use your lumbar support pillow as much as possible. Here are some tips for getting constant back support with the help of support pillows.

  1. Use Them Wherever You Can

You might have a favorite spot to use a lumbar support pillow, like your office chair - after all, you’re going to want to keep it close to the spot you sit the most. But that doesn’t mean your back stops needing support when you go elsewhere. Make sure you’re using your pillow wherever you can at work, at home, and beyond.

  1. Keep Multiple Pillows in Common Places

What will make you more likely to use your lumbar support pillow everywhere? Making sure one is always nearby. You may want to keep multiple support pillows around so you always have one within arm’s reach. You could leave one in your office, on your favorite chair at home, and anywhere else you tend to sit.

  1. Use Them for Travel

Traveling can be tough on the back, whether you’re slumped over the steering wheel on your daily drive to work or you’re crammed into a cramped airplane seat. You can take your home support pillow with  you (and have one to keep in your car), but you could also get a smaller travel-focused one, even one that is inflatable and can easily be stowed in a carry-on bag.

Also, make sure you’re taking full advantage of your car’s built-in lumbar support when you drive. Many modern cars have adjustable seat options that allow you to customize your level of back support. It may not be the best option available, but its better than slouching or rounding your back excessively.

  1. Get the Right Chair
You may want to invest in an ergonomic chair where you sit most frequently (once the pandemic hit, I bought a new chair with back support to replace the creaky, wobbly one in my home office). It’s a more expensive option than adding a lumbar support pillow to your existing chair, but it may be worth the expense to ensure you’re giving your back the support it needs.
